Local schools regularly stage lahar evacuation drills and residents are informed of lahar escape routes. The Mount Rainier Volcano Lahar Warning System has installed sirens throughout the area, activated by sensors on Mount Rainier. Based on studies of past lahar flow and the mountain's structure, Orting has been designated the most at-risk city from Mount Rainier's lahar activity scientists predict that lahar could reach Orting in 30 minutes from the mountain. Orting is located about 30 mi (48 km) from Mount Rainier. It is built entirely on several layers of lahar deposits. The city sits in a fertile valley between two major rivers, the Carbon and Puyallup. The Multi-Purpose Center (MPC) is located in the same building as the Library. The multi-use athletic field is located past the baseball fields. These fields are used by Orting Parks and Recreation programs, but are also available to reserve. This park features a softball field, a baseball field and a gravel parking area. With the lovely view of Mt Rainier!Ī Community Park located off of Whitehawk Blvd NW. This covered area features a nice cemented area with a railing. It is located right across from the Multi-Purpose Center/Library. The Gazebo is located in the Orting South Main Park right in town. The BBQ Area can host up to 5 picnic tables if needed upon request. There is a big open BBQ Pit where the Lions Club does their famous chicken.
